Ph.D. Candidate Explorer|Engineer|Maker|Artist Scripps Institution of Oceanography

As a Ph.D. candidate in the Thode Environmental Acoustics Lab within the Marine Physical Laboratory at the University of California San Diego, my research currently focuses on coastal ecosystem monitoring, coral reef restoration, marine bioacoustic analysis leveraging unsupervised machine learning and deep learning. A tinkerer at heart, I find interdisciplinary approaches most effective at tackling complex environmental challenges. In a prior season, I was in the Responsive Environments group at the MIT Media Lab and before that, a Research Engineer at NOAA's Southeast Fisheries Science Center using computer vision and baited habitat cameras to quantify commercial fishery change in the Gulf of Mexico.

If not in the field collecting data on reefs or diving into a sea of code, you'll probably find me improv jamming with friends on vocals, flute or a number of percussive modalaties. As a science communicator, I also love to think about ways we can make science more accessible via somatic immersion and community gatherings, constantly seeking novel ways to share our beautiful blue planet's stories.
